Trailer for Scars of Abyssea surfaces for Final Fantasy XI
While there is a stir around the new open beta for Final Fantasy XIV, there's some very huge additions coming to Final Fantasy XI as well. Scars of Abyssea is due to be released with the September version update, & in case players forget about it, Square-Enix has updated the teaser site. Not only does it include previews of the new Empyrean armor sets & a new trailer for the mini-expansion, it also offers us a predicted launch date for the update of September 8th.
Although the chest pieces are not shown & it is a bit early to be positive, it does appear that most of the Empyrean Armor sets are the new Artifact pieces (an upgrade from the earlier Relic Armor). Combined with the approaching upgrades to Trial of the Magians, this armor set may become the norm for some time. Players can take a glance at all of the approaching attractions on the official teaser site, & the Final Fantasy XI update ought to be obtainable early next week.

Communal Town Life
Two times you have vanquished the poor possessed giant spider, it is time to settle in to town life. Here is where you meet up with other players, generate your parties & set out for adventures. Here is also where you encounter the quest method, & learn about the Tactics-like style of the dialog method in Vindictus. Everytime you enter a building, in lieu of seeing the actual NPCs standing about, you are treated to a stunning interior shot of blacksmith's shop, the inn, etc. & then a NPC portrait pops up for you to converse with. You see neither your avatar or the NPCs. It is an fascinating decision to have this type of departure from the usual way NPC conversations are handled. One the one hand it gives the developers the freedom to generate a high amount of detail while minimizing loadtime issues. On the other hand though, you do feel a loss of immersion everytime you zone in to an area like this. Current screenshots show your character standing inside the inn, so perhaps this tactics-like dialog method is a placeholder.
When you are in town, other player characters are all seen as wearing cloaks. This is another way for Nexon to provide a high level of detail with character armor, but to minimize server lag when you have a huge group of players in the same location. Two times you party up with other players, it is time to head down to the docks, where boats represent the instances that your group step in to when setting off to adventure. The party leader calls the boat, & then you all board, practice your fighting, strategize as needed, & when you are prepared, the boat "sails" off for the instance.
Instanced Combat
So far in the game I have only been able to play one instance map, but it is a great one. The monsters you encounter are smart, with strong AI featured, the bosses. As I mentioned before, I normally don't like this type of game. I prefer knowing other people are out in the world I am escaping to.
That being said, the rapid 30-minute instance is a ideal way to get together with friends & enjoy a rapid run through something. In case you have lots of fun, you can run the instance multiple times, trying for better loot with a harder setting. Everything is focused around the get in, have fun, & get out mentality. I think today's MMO game enthusiasts are looking for such a game. The first game I keep in mind using this type of method was City of Heroes, but they also included a persistent world. With Vindictus there is only the group instance & the towns. There is only leaping in & fighting some monsters, & then moving on.

 
As far as I can tell from what I have seen of the closed beta, Vindictus does what it is intended to do. It doesn't pretend it is a bigger game than it is, & it doesn't lure you in with unrealistic expectations. From the moment you load in to the game, you can tell this is about intensely concentrated PvE combat, & little else. The game is intensely stunning, with a quantity of the best graphics in a video game to date, & the developers have made some smart decisions as to how they handle server load in response to such a high graphic quality.
The next beta phase ought to be beginning soon, & no doubt there will be the chance to explore the other classes, see what high level content looks like, & see the other types of instance maps. So far, though, I must say, I am incredibly impressed. I cannot wait to see more.
